Portfolio diversification: check exposure beyond the tickers

Portfolio diversification: check exposure beyond the tickers — Golden Bear Capital research

A portfolio can contain ten tickers and still depend heavily on one economic outcome. An equipment supplier, software provider and property owner might all rely on the same spending cycle. Their sector labels do not reveal the full overlap.

Build a simple exposure map

For each hypothetical company, record major customers, end markets, borrowing sensitivity and geographic revenue. Mark unknown information as unknown. Do not fill gaps with assumptions based on the company name.

Suppose three positions each hold $1,000 in businesses dependent on the same customer’s investment budget. The direct holdings differ, but $3,000 of the portfolio shares a potential source of disruption.

Correlation is a measurement with a period

Historical correlation describes how return series moved together in a selected sample. Daily and monthly calculations can differ. Relationships can also change, particularly when financing or market conditions shift.

Record the dates, frequency and return definition beside a correlation value. A high historical correlation does not prove a shared causal mechanism; a low one does not eliminate common exposure.

Keep the map beside your market tools. It gives a concrete reason to investigate why several positions react to the same announcement.

For practice, group an invented watchlist by customer dependence instead of sector. Then repeat the grouping by interest-rate sensitivity. The different groupings reveal what a single industry label misses.

Count holdings after examining their exposures. Diversification depends on what can affect the investments, along with weights and liquidity, rather than the length of the ticker list.
